Scream For Ice Cream It's National Chocolate Ice Cream Day

Scream For Ice Cream It's National Chocolate Ice Cream Day

I got into making homemade ice cream when I was about 19 years old. I've made tons of crazy flavors from espresso, to creme anglaise, to peach-strawberry. When I realized that today was National Chocolate Ice Cream Day I immediately went to my folder of ice cream recipes to get the chocolate one... only I was shocked to find out I've never made homemade chocolate ice cream! Making ice cream is fun, easy (as long as you have an ice cream maker - you can get an affordable one at Target - and time). No one can deny a small bowl of fresh, homemade ice cream scooped out right from the container. To take a peek at the recipe I'll use to make chocolate ice cream,

Chocolate Ice Cream
From Alton Brown

1 1/2 ounces unsweetened cocoa powder, approximately 1/2 cup
3 cups half-and-half
1 cup heavy cream
8 large egg yolks
9 ounces sugar
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

  1. Place the cocoa powder along with 1 cup of the half-and-half into a medium saucepan over medium heat and whisk to combine.
  2. Add the remaining half-and-half and the heavy cream. Bring the mixture just to a simmer, stirring occasionally, and remove from the heat.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl whisk the egg yolks until they lighten in color. Gradually add the sugar and whisk to combine.
  4. Temper the cream mixture into the eggs and sugar by gradually adding small amounts, until about 1/3 of the cream mixture has been added.
  5. Pour in the remainder and return the entire mixture to the saucepan and place over low heat. Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the mixture thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon and reaches 170 to 175 degrees F.
  6. Pour the mixture into a container and allow to sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.
  7. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  8. Place the mixture into the refrigerator and once it is cool enough not to form condensation on the lid, cover and store for 4 to 8 hours or until the temperature reaches 40 degrees F or below.
  9. Pour into an ice cream maker and process according to the manufacturer's directions. This should take approximately 25 to 35 minutes. Serve as is for soft serve or freeze for another 3 to 4 hours to allow the ice cream to harden.

Makes 1 1/2 quarts.

How could I have missed this?? Though, I'm pretty sure I probably ate chocolate ice cream that day due to extreme sugar cravings.

I am getting ice cream tonight! My throat has been sore for five days now (it's slowly getting better) but I think some lovely cool Baskin Robbins should do the trick!

I actually am not a fan of chocolate ice cream, but I've always wanted to do this! My grandparents make their own and experiment with flavors, but vanilla and strawberry are consistent favorites. Yum!
