Subway to Pass McDonald's With Most Stores in the World

Subway Poised to Surpass McDonald's in Locations

Could Subway be the world's new McDonald's? It sure looks that way. In the next few months, it will become the world's largest food chain. Although McDonald's has a total of 32,158 eateries worldwide, it has largely curtailed expansion efforts, preferring to hone in on existing store sales. Subway, on the other hand, has been multiplying exponentially, with outposts in China, Qatar, India, and France. This week, it's expected to exceed 31,800 total stores. At a time when restaurants and fast-food establishments are struggling, Subway turned a profit in the last year with its its $5 foot-long sandwich promotion. Yet in overall sales, McDonald's remains untouched. According to industry experts, the average US McDonald's generates $2.3 million in sales, compared to $445,000 for Subway. I'm surprised — I had no idea that Subway was so ubiquitous in other parts of the world. What about you? Would you rather patronize a Subway or a McDonald's?

Subway and only Subway. Haven't eaten at a McDonald's in years and don't plan on ever doing it again.

Togos!! :) Well I believe the whole subway surpassing mcd's in locations. There are five Subways within a 1-4 mile radius of my parents home where as only 2 mcd's within the same. But to choose between, I'd prefer healthy Subway over McD's, but sometimes I hear a Big Mac calling my name . . . until I drive by an InNOut. :-D

Subway restaurants are a lot cheaper to open and run. They might have more locations than McDonald's someday, but I doubt they will ever surpass them in sales though. I will always choose McDonald's over Subway. I don't like cold cuts and I find that even the simplest homemade sandwich will always taste better than a Subway sub. I also find that their subs are overpriced.

If I'm ever forced to eat fast food, I prefer Subway. There's a big selection of healthy stuff that I can eat there. McDonald's is a bit more limited.

I don't eat at either on a regular basis, but I'd rather smell someone else's McDonald's than Subway.

i love subway. this makes sense though. think about how much more expensive it is to start up a mcdonalds vs a subway. at mcd's, you need a fryer, grill, drive thru, etc. at subway, all you need is a microwave and a bread oven.

Sounds good to me :) Other than the sodium content, Subway isn't bad! I actually crave a sandwich these days. Yes, a simple sandwich, but somehow Subway's always tastes better, especially with the sweet onion sauce. Yeah, I think I'm hooked on Subway!

I like them both. Sometimes I'm in the mood for McDonald's (even if the chicken nuggets are made from baby chicks) and other times, I want something healthier like a six-inch turkey on honey wheat with mayo and American cheese and a bag of Harvest Cheddar SunChips. I'm actually going to Subway tonight for dinner...
