Taco Bell's New Quesalupa Is Bursting With Cheesy Goodness

Feb 13 2016 - 4:00am

Taco Bell's newest creation [1] is here, and it's like two of your current favorites combined. Meet the quesalupa, a delicious cross between a quesadilla and a chalupa.

The shell was actually inspired by Salvadoran pupusas, according to Kat Garcia, senior marketing manager for Taco Bell. Back in 2012, when development for the quesalupa started, Garcia said a small team went to a Salvadoran restaurant to try pupusas, and they were so excited about how good they were. "We tried these, and they were so incredibly craveable and indulgent, and we absolutely loved them," she said. Taco Bell then did what it does best and combined that traditional dish with its famous taco, and the quesalupa was born.

Fast forward to 2015 when the quesalupa was finally ready for public consumption. It was first tested in the Toledo, OH, market before being available as a mystery preorder this year. Yes, people were actually able to preorder it without having any idea what it was, and when people picked them up Saturday, they were presented with a gold-foil-wrapped mystery item.

Today Taco Bell put the quesalupa on the menu for real, and we're so glad it did. It feels and tastes very much like a chalupa, but the soft shell with the gooey cheese inside is basically everything I could possibly want in a Taco Bell meal. It's definitely indulgent, just like Garcia said, what with all that cheese. (But you won't hear me complaining.) The quesalupa will only be on the menu for a short 15 weeks, though, so start stuffing your face now to experience maximum cheesiness!
