The cupcake recipe is tasty, although a bit dense in texture. The frosting recipe isn't quite what I like, so I just stick with the "5-minute frosting" recipe on the C&H powdered sugar box; I use whipping cream or whole milk for a creamier frosting. Someday, if I travel to NYC, I will definitely try some of the wares at the various bakeries.:)

This recipe is definitely not the same as they use at Magnolia. I think the cupcakes are pretty close, but the frosting is off. I always add a lot more confectioner's sugar and less milk.

I love Rocco's cannollis too puddinpie! That's all I really order as far as dessert goes there. And their Napoleons, I must say, are quite good.

I made these for my boyfriend's birthday in December. They are INCREDIBLE! Just make sure you pay really, really close attention to the mixing times, or they will turn out dry! Also-- the frosting is REALLY sweet. They're equally good with Chocolate frosting.

^I was in NY recently and had the best dessert at "Room 4 Dessert". It's a dessert bar opened by Will Goldfarb (who used to work at El Bulli). The desserts are definitely not traditional, and are very creative. My favourite was the "Pom Pom Yeahs". I've only ever read bad things about Magnolia cupcakes (dry cake, too sweet frosting.) Like nixievixiepixie said, Rocco's is great. Well, their cannoli (filled to order) are great. The lobstertail pastry is also pretty good. The other two pastries I ate there were forgettable.

I've done Serendipity's also. I have to say I enjoyed the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, but it's not worth a long wait over. Also the food portions for a meal are puny for such a high price. For desserts, I love Rocco's Pastry Shop on Bleecker Street. Especially after a pizza at John's across the street. Bleecker is such a magical street!

I just took my husband to Magnolia when we visited NYC a couple weeks ago because of all the hype. The icing is TO DIE FOR but the cake part was dry as supergurl said. My husband was of course not that impressed after I'd gone to all the trouble to get us there. We had wanted to try Crumbs but never made it- it looks like they have a lot more variety. We waited in line at Magnolia for 30 minutes AND they had a doorman/bouncer person which I thought was hilarious fun!

If you want the magnolia bakery cupcakes, and don't want to deal with the lines, go up to midtown and hit Buttercup Bake Shop - same cupcakes, low-key joint. There's also a choice of muffins, and cookies as well, plus whole cake slices! I'd get the red velvet if I were you. I agree with supergurl Re: Serendipity, WASTE OF TIME! Also, when you make these cupcakes, you may get yucked out by the amount of butter. Just a warning.

also...since we're on the subject of over-hyped NYC food locales. Serendipity -- 2 hour wait, food overpriced and so-so. Their "hot" dessert is the Frozen Hot Chocolate is just a milkshake. Nothing special. I was even told there a $8 minium order PER PERSON when I went there. Hopefully, I didn't let the wind out of anyone's sails but just wanted to give you the real scoop. :)

New Yorker here. Magnolia's is a big waste of time. Most true NYCer don't go there. The line actually goes around the block!! It's a huge joke between the natives. The cupcake is usually dry and the frosting is too buttery sweet. Taste like any grocery store cupcake. Crumbs Bakery is a lot better and great variety (red velvet, cappucino, hostess, oreo) YUM. There are a couple of locations. Anyways, don't believe the hype. Ooh, also, if you're planning on traveling to NYC, stop at Rice to Riches. It's a rice pudding joint and it's soooo good. Cheers!
