Tom Colicchio Performs Heimlich, Saves Fellow Chef's Life

Tom Colicchio Performs Heimlich, Saves Fellow Chef's Life

At an inaugural benefit for D.C. Central Kitchen, Tom Colicchio went from being a top chef to a real-life hero.

According to eye witness Ezra Klein, Joan Nathan, the award-winning cookbook author of Jewish Cooking in America and hostess of the event, began to choke on a piece of chicken. Colicchio happened to be nearby and when Alice Waters shouted, "Does anyone know the Heimlich maneuver?" he was able to perform the life-saving technique on Nathan.

Nathan was lucky to have such a strong, quick-thinking chef nearby. After hearing this news, do you consider Colicchio a hero? Does it make you want to learn the Heimlich maneuver?

Doing something you know how to do is not mutually exclusive of being a hero. I think it's awesome that he did that. As a CPR instructor, we're supposed to tell people that even bad CPR beats no CPR...but given the bad CPR I've seen, I don't know if I'd actually want bad CPR if I needed CPR.

Good for Tom! Everyone should know how to do it. He is not a hero though...just doing something he was trained to do. Everyone PR too.

It's a vital skill to know, especially in the restaurant/food industry. I had to perform the Heimlich maneuver on myself once...I was choking on a bagel and my brother was standing there, watching me and saying "Hey, you're turning kinda blue!". I managed to force myself against the countertop and blow the bagel piece out.

How can someone not know the Heimlich? How does ALICE not know it?Remind me not to choke the next time I'm at Chez Panisse.

They taught us that in school, everyone should know the Heimlich. Especially people working in food, isn't that a training requirement?
