Top Chef 3.6 - Freezer Burn Recap

Did you guys catch the Bertolli commercial new episode of Top Chef last night? It was super-sized with an extra 15 minutes of fun, and this time around, I feel confident enough to say I finally know who everyone is. When the cheftestants head to the kitchen, they are met by Padma and Rocco Dispirito (you might remember him from his own reality show The Restaurant). Instead of a normal quickfire challenge, Rocco and Padma are hosting a "culinary bee." Each person has to identify food items either by taste or sight. If they get it right they go to the end of the line, if they get it wrong they're out. Surprisingly, six of the ten chefs are out after round 1, leaving Howie, Brian, Hung and Casey. In his defense, this is what Joey had to say about getting axed so soon, "You got Padma looking at you looking all sexy today, and then you got this asshole right next to her, and your mind just goes blank." Raight... totally blank.

To find out who won the quickfire, what they had to do for elimination (hint: think "brrrr!") and who had to pack their knives and go,

After 6 rounds of the culinary bee - which sounds like so much fun, anyone interested in hosting one? - Casey emerges as the winner with roasted red bell peppers. Oh and my favorite part of the quickfire round? That would have to be when Hung, who could have tasted his ingredient, was too cocky to taste it, said it was one thing, then decided to taste it and realized he was wrong.

Once the quickfire is over, the cheftestants are presented with a bag of Bertolli frozen dinner and a sales pitch by Rocco, who happens to be Bertolli's spokesperson. They then draw knives in order to separate themselves into groups of two, and are told that each pair must create a new Italian-style Mediterranean frozen pasta meal. They have two hours to cook and get things into the freezer and a hour to assemble the next day.

This is where they should have been paying attention. They have a full hour the next day, so obviously the judges think they will need time to do something. Out of all of the teams, only Tre and CJ thought to individually freeze the items - so that the pasta would not absorb the sauce - and ultimately this worked in their favor. Their dish of Black Truffle – Parmesan Linguini with Grilled Chicken, along with Casey and Dale's Turkey and Pork Meatballs proved to be the best dishes. In the end it was Tre & CJ's understanding of the freezing technique that put their dish in the lead and won them a trip to Italy!

If there are winners, there must be losers. In the bottom we had the can't get-along gangs of Howie & Sara M. and Joey and Hung. In one group there is constant bickering, Sara doesn't seem to "do anything" while Howie is just irritated that someone is second-guessing him. Meanwhile Joey plods along doing what he wants and ignores Hung, which was quite costly being that Hung knew they needed to freeze everything individually. Ultimately the frustration between the partners causes both groups to perform poorly and their dishes suffer for it. In the end, in a move I found slightly shocking, Joey is asked to pack his knives and go.

Now, for a few things to discuss:

  • Trip to Italy?! Man those earlier winners got the shaft with a stack of books and some wine, don't you think?
  • Does Bravo need to work on their editing or what? I knew half way in that Brian and Sara N. were neither winning nor losing, they just didn't get any screen time.
  • Was that clip of Sara M. smoking in the hot tub odd to anyone else?
  • How difficult was it to watch Joey break down and cry?
  • Do you think Joey should have been sent home? I really thought it was going to be Sara.

I totally cried when they sent Joey home! I felt so bad for him. I think Sara should've been sent home. :( ANd what's up with Rocco's eyebrows? Gosh, over-tweezed (lol, if that's even a word)...

I thought Sara should've gotten the boot instead of Joey, but not by much. She just didn't do much of anything but whine to Howie, who has proven himself far more than she has. Joey basically admitted that he will only listen to someone if they scream in his face, which is pretty pathetic. It was sad to see him cry so much, he must have just cracked from all the stress. The commercialism in this episode was way too much. I understand they need sponsors to keep the show afloat, but come on. It was a little much.

UGH. I couldn't believe Sara wasn't eliminated. She has done nothing noteworthy during the entire show and has been on the bottom half for many different challenges.

I haven't watched much this season, but I will say this: Rocco sucks. After his reality show, I don't know how he has any cred in the foodie world. Cute alone DOES NOT cut it.

I totally thought sara was naked in the hot tub too. I was like 'what the hell?' She was the one that needed to be sent home.

I'm so sad that Joey went home. Sara was so useless in the challenges. I'm sure the shot of her smoking in the tub was just to keep people's interests. And the trip to italy was to keep the cheftestants motivated. (Books and wine. Big deal. Now a trip to italy..That's something to work for!)

Sara definitely should have gone home. She was in the bottom four in a couple of the earlier challenges and maybe it was editing, but it really looked like she did nothing during this challenge. Watching Joey break down, I almost started crying too. I really did not think he would get so emotional.

You can't send the really annoying people home this early. People need someone to hate. And sitting in a hot tub possibly nude doesn't hurt either :)

I also thought Sara should go home. I was literally chanting her name at the end hoping they would pick her. I thought she was naked too...her bandeau top was almost the color of her skin and yes...I also found it disturbing! Eek! What was up with the weird variety of foods in the quickfire. Some of those ingredients were like, "Duh!" for anyone who's spent significant time in a kitchen....Bowtie pasta???

I hope Sara was wearing a bandeau... but it was still a disturbing shot and I can't wait for her to leave. I felt really bad for Joey.. but he should have listened to Hung (I can't believe I am saying this!)

I think Sara was wearing a strapless bandeau top. Look closely. Also, I really thought she should have gone home instead of Joey, that big galoot!

I totally thought she was naked. I didn't get it. And what's up with all the smokers? Is it me or does it seem like we are seeing a whole lotta smoking? Joey may not be the BEST, but is good and knows what he is doing. Sara SO should have gone home. Right at the elimination my friends said she would go, and I said no that it had to be more dramatic than that and not so expected. I was kind of seeing the build up to Joey leaving. I was sad that it was him and not her. Tre and CJ really did a good job of understanding the concept and making a great meal. Right when Casey and Dale said meatballs and then pesto my friends gagged. I said it could only work if it was a turkey or chicken blend and sure enough it was turkey and pork. That kind of sounds good too..... I am SOOOO tired of Hung and his cockiness. I hope he goes soon but know better than to wish for that.

Wow, I just discussed Sara in the hot tub earlier. What was that about? I really feel now they are keeping Hung around just for drama purposes. I was trying to remember the last time Hung did anything noteworthy.

I'm not surprised Joey went home. He's an embarrassment to Italian-Americans everywhere. And furthermore, Bertoli commercial is right! Jeeze! I think this was the worst episode of Top Chef I've ever seen. It wasn't about cooking, it was about marketing. I am offended that these Bertoli products exist, because, frankly, the stuff in them isn't that difficult to make on your own. And I'm even more offended that chefs were asked to create them. The Ratatouille crew would be so upset!

Yeah, the editing is pretty ridiculous sometimes... you can usually figure out who's going home or who's going to win half way through the show. Seeing Joey cry was awful... not so much because I feel for him but because he cried... a lot... on television. It's okay for boys to cry... but come on! Gimme a break! I am starting to feel like Sara has no reason to still be on that show... she hasn't proven herself and she has major attitude... but doesn't have anything to back it up so far. Was it interesting to anyone else how all the chefs were pretty UNimpressed with Rocco's appearance? They all looked like "Oh great, Rocco he's a pompous jerk" or "What is He doing here?! We're used to highly respected and admirable chefs serving as our guest judges!". That show "The Restaurant" really hurt Rocco in the long run... which is probably because it had such horrible editing.
