You've Been Cutting Cakes Wrong, but We Can Teach You the Right Way

What Would You Make?

Here's the scenario: you are at home and hungry for food. You have to cook up something scrumptious for you and your boyfriend/girlfriend/ spouse/child/friend, but the ingredients you have on hand are limited.

You have cooked ham, a package of frozen pre-made dough, and fresh spinach. Using these products, along with whatever you currently have on hand in your cupboard and refrigerator, what would you make?

To see what I would make,

  1. I would start by sautéing a chopped onion and garlic in olive oil.
  2. Next I would chop the spinach and wilt it into the onions and garlic.
  3. I would grate up whatever cheese I have in my fridge and dice the ham.
  4. I would fold the cheese and ham into the onion, spinach mixture.
  5. I would roll the dough out until it is 1/4 inch thick and then cut out little circles with a 3-inch diameter cookie cutter.
  6. In the center of each dough circle, I would mound a heaping tablespoon of the spinach ham mixture.
  7. Next I would fold over the dough and pinch to close, forming empanadas. I would brush the outside of the dough with an egg wash and bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until the empanadas are golden brown.
  8. Finally, I would serve them warm with a cold beer.

I always have tons of eggs on hand, so quiche it is!! although calzones sound good, too, if you had a little cheese to put it there. Yum, now I'm getting hungry.

I think I'd probably try to make a version of a meat pie but with ham. So I'd saute the ham with some cut up some onion, garlic, carrotts, celery into teeny, weeny pieces, and season with salt and pepper and dry mustard. Then I'd mix it all in bowl and add some olive oil and some bread crumbs to give it some texture. Roll it into individual pieces of the pastry, brush the top with egg whites and cook at 375 until it was browned. Spinach salad on the side. Dinner!

My first thought was a quiche.

I would take the pie crust roll it out, cut it into strips and twist the ham and some white cheese into the strips, and bake. Then make a spinach salad with pickled beets, red onion, mix some of the pickling juice with mayo to dress the salad. Yum! Dinner!

Just as something different (my first thought was an empanada or quiche as well) - 1. I would lightly saute the ham,(maybe make a red-eye gravy if I had any coffee left over) rip the spinach and toss it with some craisins and gorgonzola, and add some candied pecans from Trader Joe's (which are excellent -they actually have more like a very light glaze than a thicker candied coating) and toss with either a raspberry or dijon vinaigrette, and serve both on the same plate, along with a sliced of ciabatta topped with garlic and butter and toasted in the oven. 2. I'd make either apple cobbler or an apple pie for dessert with the pie crust - sliced apples tossed with sugar and cinnamon, dot with butter.

I would also do the pinwheel thing or a pizza appetizer with mozz and sliced into triangles.

Yum! And Yum to the quiche! I like finger foods, so I would roll the dough out, spread it with cheese (either cream cheese or whatever I had on hand, I usually have mozarella) then I would layer the ham, and spinich, roll it up, cut it into pinwheels and bake it. I'd serve it with canned tomato soup that I spice up with garlic and onion.
