Who Says Jail Food Is Terrible?

Remember that scene in Arrested Development where they host a dinner inside of the prison? Turns out that might not be such a ludicrous idea after all. Diners in Pisa, Italy are swarming to an exclusive restaurant located inside a top security prison - one where all the chefs, waiters and staff are robbers, murderers and mobmen.

The patrons eat their meals in a deconstructed chapel next to the 60ft-high walls, watch towers, and security cameras belonging to Fortezza Medicea. While inside they dine on a signature vegetarian menu that has been cooked up by a someone who's serving life for murder - he's part of the 20 person team of chefs, kitchen hands and waiters who have all been through strict security checks and are constantly supervised by armed prison wardens.

The restaurant opened two months ago, but is so popular, Italy is considering doing this in other jails.

What happens if you don't leave a tip? ;)

I think it's cool to help rehabilitate the inmates, if that's the purpose. Otherwise, it's just a creepy (albeit delicious) gimmick.

I think its great. And hopefully it'll help some of the inmates in their post-prison life!

I think it is a good idea, I would go. I think it would give inmates valuable job skills and a way to DO something constructive during the day.

Haha, yes, I do remember that Arrested Development episode! Too hilarious. I'm not sure if the public service announcement featured http://www.slashfood.com/2007/05/18/your-daily-psa-to-not-drink-and-drive/ would still be valid... for that prison at least.

When in Pisa...

I would give it a try! They should try this elsewhere. Maybe money generated could go into costs of the jail, and then maybe we all wouldn't have to pay as much in taxes to keep these places running.

Definitely an interesting idea! Not sure I'd be flocking there with the others though...

We visited a jail in Louisiana, Angola, (as part of a government course)...anyway, we had lunch there it was amazing. They had fresh fried chicken made by the inmates and it was so good.

That's pretty cool in a strange way haha. I'm not sure I'd be able to stand being there for very long, though. I'm much too paranoid.

Interesting! The food must be *fantastic* if people are swarming over there...

Hmm, interesting idea. I assume they get paid for this? Personally, I'd be slightly nervous about being with former mobmen and murderers, security check or not.
