We Tried Umami's Pumpkin Spice Latte Burger So You Don't Have To

Umami Burger just unleashed the unthinkable: a Pumpkin Spice Latte Burger ($12) with pumpkin pie spice mascarpone, kabocha squash tempura, coffee molasses drizzle, and roasted garlic aioli, and they're claiming there's nothing #basic about it. But we had to know for ourselves if a PSL could successfully translate into a burger. When the burger arrived, it appeared very similar to its advertisement, with a huge stack of crispy kabocha tempura and a black coffee drizzle.

Upon first bite, there is no mistaking the pumpkin spice flavors and sweetness from the mascarpone and the molasses drizzle. At a place called Umami, we expected the burger to taste supersavory, as the joint is known for that. However, this burger tastes more like something fried up at a state fair. It's not far off from becoming a funnel cake/burger hybrid. Though we applaud Umami for its creativity, this burger is more novel than delicious. You are better off ordering Umami's classic burger . . . then running across the street to Starbucks for a PSL afterward, if you're really needing a fix.
