Prepare to Drool Over TikTok's New Favorite Drink Trend: Whipped Coffee

Mar 19 2020 - 2:10pm

There's a new trend sweeping TikTok, and it's not another one of those catchy choreographed dances [1] — although it may give you the caffeine boost needed to learn one. Tons of people on the app have begun making a frothy beverage dubbed "whipped coffee," and just scrolling through all the videos [2] has us salivating.

Although the creamy, cloud-like concoction looks like something only a professional barista [3] would know how to create, it's actually super easy to make at home. Most TikTokkers are following these simple instructions to get in on the trend:

  1. Combine equal proportions of instant coffee powder, sugar, and hot water in a bowl. (Many are choosing to use 2 tablespoons of each ingredient, for reference.)
  2. Using a whisk or a handheld milk frother (if you have one), whip the ingredients together until the mixture turns into a Cool Whip-like consistency with a caramel-brown color. (Note: This may take a few minutes, but at least it doubles as an arm workout if you're whisking!)
  3. Pour yourself a half-full glass of milk, scoop the whipped coffee on top, and sip away. (Try channeling your inner barista by adding a sprinkling of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup.)

Whipped coffee gained popularity in other countries like India, Pakistan, and South Korea [4], the latter of which nicknamed it "dalgona coffee" because it resembles a popular toffee-like treat with that same name there. If you're not much of a coffee drinker, some TikTokkers have swapped the instant coffee for matcha powder or cocoa powder, and the ending results are still just as frothy and tasty. Watch a handful of videos ahead to see the dreamy sips come together, and you'll likely feel inspired to try out the three-ingredient recipe for yourself.
