Before and After: A Victorian in San Francisco

Native San Franciscan designer Tom Leach has a background in interior architecture and landscape design, and specializes in historical facade restoration. His work has been featured regularly on HGTV, and his latest project was the restoration of this Victorian home in San Francisco. As you can see, it was adorned with little else besides an Obama poster, and its hodge-podge palette left much to be desired. Once Leach got his hands on the house, a drastic (and fabulous) transformation ensued. To see the after photo,

A change of palette and the addition of Victorian ornamentation and moldings give the house polish, but the window installation and staircase renovation make it a focal point. I'm wildly impressed! What do you think?

I like the new look a heck of alot better. They did a good job on it.

Hi, the finished effect is lovely, however I much prefer the home as it was, excepting the addition of the circular window and the new steps. The cooler colours were more appealing and it looked very inviting.

The colors don't thrill me, but the house looks beautiful! That must have taken quite a pretty penny to renovate! Everything on that facade is new!

As someone who lives in and loves Victorians, I really like the transformation. All the decorative work is incredible. I noticed that were a few comments that thought the exterior should have been made modern but I love that Leach kept with the historicity of both the home itself and the neighborhood. The beauty of many of the old SF (along with other cities) is that the history of the place is reflected in these homes that were built utilizing the skills of so many different craftspeople, i.e., black/iron smiths, carpenters, painters, plasterers and all the incredible details that no longer are a part of the art of homebuilding. I look at my own home and am always amazed at the details: the handcarved fireplace mantel, the carvings on the staircase, the plaster, the trim, the stained glass which is something to be appreciated. I am lucky to also have another home which is currently in the final stages of construction and that is a modern take on the traditional Northern New Mexico L-Shaped, steep roofed adobe. I love and appreciate the different eras in homes. Really nice update!

I like the widow additions and I see that he did a great job, but it's a little too much for me (and I generally like Victorians).

Of course the facade needed a transformation but I would have chosen something more... modern. The colour scheme and the floral motifs are quite boring in my opinion.

It's not my style at all (Victorians have always creeped me out), but I love the color and quirkiness of it!
