Best Edible Gardening Books

10 Great Edible Garden Books

This weekend, a friend of mine who'd previously considered herself to have a black thumb tweeted that her vegetable garden was officially "working" — her seeds had turned into seedlings! Every first-time gardener (and even old veterans) can attest that that moment when the tiny seeds turn into plants is a magical one indeed.

But what exactly do you do after those seeds peek through? How are you to know what to do in terms of expanding your garden, keeping your plants healthy, and knowing what edibles to plant for your next season's harvest? The first step, of course, should be to join The Girls' Guide to Gardening, our community gardening group. But after that, I recommend you pick up one of these inspiring gardening books.

Start with Stephen Orr's Tomorrow's Garden, which will school you on edible as well as sustainable — and of course, beautiful — gardening techniques. Serious foodies will appreciate Sunset's lovingly written The One Block Feast, which includes garden planning ideas, recipes, and other locavore ideas. Want to try to harvest the wilderness? Then Creating a Forest Garden is an enchanting read that will wow you with its concepts and gorgeous photos.
