Can You Fix a Running Toilet?

Whether it's a question of the plunger handle being broken or a float that won't stay above water's edge, toilets are often known to run — that is, continue to try to fill the tank with water while the water leaks out. Have you ever fixed one on your own?

I really want to learn how to fix things on my own, without my boyfriend's or anyone else's help. I think it's really empowering to be able to repair something simple without help.

I actually have two running toilets right now and I am going to change the flaps. If that doesn't work then I will have to call a plumber. I turned one off b/c the noise is bugging me.

I remember one time I clogged up the toilet and I really didn't want to do so I had my mom and brother-in-law do it. Ya I was embarrassed but I really didn't want to do it.

I don't like to touch the toilet at all, so I for damn sure can't fix it.

Sometimes. But for some reason the inside of a toilet tank really scares me. It's just a fear I have.

Though this is a different toilet problem - my roommate's toilet started acting up yesterday and overflowed onto the carpet in her room =O Calling maintenance in our area took at least an hour. Now, being able to fix THAT in a jiffy would be (gross but) handy.

This one everyone should learn how to do, it happens so often in apartments.

I was at a bar a while ago with friends and i came back from the bathroom and mentioned that the toilets were all messed up and that i just lifted up the back and fixed the problem and while my bf was slightly grossed out my sister agreed she does that all the time. we thought it was pretty funny. So yeah i do this all the time.

I've fixed this more time than I care to count. I learned my lesson when I was solo in my first apartment. I relied on the handyman to fix it and he didn't even wait to make sure it worked. I had a huge water bill that month and I ended up shutting the valve off unless I was actually using the toilet. I think there is something in the water that warps the ones we buy. Also, those bleach tablets people put in the tank can eat at the plastic!

When we moved into our house, the previous owners had changed all their high-end toilets for cheap ones. None were installed properly and I had to fix 'em all. I got very tired of dripping water.
