Casa Quickie: Buy in Bulk

Hilary Swank was quoted in Woman's World in 2005 saying, "I cut coupons, love specials, and believe in buying toilet paper and toothpaste in bulk. It's just who I am." Swank probably picked up the penny-pinching habit during her meager beginnings living in a trailer park, but she was onto something. Avoiding products that are packed for single use, and buying in bulk instead, is a form of precycling, or preventing waste before it happens. You can do so by storing your bulk products and transferring a smaller portion to reusable containers. Pick up products like tp, dishwashing liquid, and shampoo at health-food stores like Whole Foods and large, discount retailers like CostCo and Sam's Club.

I love buying in bulk. It saves money, time, and gas. I also HATE running out of things I need, so i make sure to replish before I am running too low.

We have a Sam's Club membership and go about once a month. We buy mostly the same things that have been mentioned already.

For those of you buying big bottles of shampoo/conditioner and putting them in smaller bottles, we have a wall mounted shower dispenser in our home. We buy the big bottles and pour them in the dispenser, so it takes up less room, and it helps us use less shampoo/conditioner/etc.

The only warehouse club we have here is Sam's Club so no bulk for me. I'd rather be inconvenienced than support Walmart.

I try to buy somethings in bulk. Now that we have our own house and have more room i plan on buying more in bulk since we have a place to put it. The shampoo and conditioner is a great idea. They have it cheap at BJ's but i have never bought the big bottles because at our old house we had just a shower stall, no tub and no storage. I never thought of putting them in smaller bottles. great idea.

I buy bathroom tissue, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, detergent and other household items in bulk. Like ElizabethRae said, I refill smaller bottles of shampoos and detergents because those huge bottles are quite heavy. I've recently started purchasing more kitchen towels to avoid buying papertowels that are ridiculously expensive and simply are a waste.

I seriously just had this conversation today. I like to buy ginormous bottles of shampoo and refill smaller ones. So I store the big bottle and refill the smaller one as it gets low. I like to buy the bigger ones anyway because they are cheaper, but they are pretty unmanageable for everyday use because of how heavy they are.

We love Sams Club. I bought a huge pack of, ahem, 'feminine products' about a year ago and still have enough to last at least through the end of the year. And we have toilet paper stored all over the house.
