Cool Idea: A Boat Garage

I spotted this photograph, shot by James R. Salomon, of a home on Squaw Lake, NH, and turned green with envy. Not only do these homeowners have a lake as their backyard, but they have a garage for their boats actually attached to their home. Maybe I'm not familiar enough with waterfront homes, but this seems really extraordinary. And if you hold your hand up to block the water, the house looks any other New England home with a garage you might see on land; it's seamlessly integrated. Better yet, the garage roof offers itself up as an expansive deck extending from the interior where the family can look out at the lake. Remind me why I'm living in a small apartment in the city again?

Sundown, any boat garage I have ever seen there is nothing on the bottom. People do have a cradle that their boat sits in so it can be stored out of the water or the boat can sit right in the water. Which brings me to another reason why I dislike boat garages. You come out to your boat in the morning and there is small creature living in it or a bat in the corner of the garage sleeping. Oh boat garages...

I have never seen this! Is there a bottom door too so that no one (or nothing) is able to swim into your garage?

We've built a few clients giant boathouses at their giant cottages, especially in the Muskokas (one of the affluent lake areas skigurl mentioned). At first glance I would suspect that is only a boathouse and that the main residence is even more impressive!

This is fairly common on big, affluent lakes, at least in Canada. This picture is amazing though. Inside the garage there would be a boat lift so the boat could be lifted out of the water when not in use. Not to mention, that mahogany boat is worth a pretty penny.

Eek! I have always found boat garages to be scary. The spiders that live in them and then get into your boat are CRAZY big. We have our boat docked outside with a canopy over it.
