Cool Idea: Nick De Marco's Garbage Chair

Cool Idea: Nick De Marco's Garbage Chair

Artist Nick DeMarco from California College of the Arts designed this chair for a sustainable production furniture class. His XS chair is essentially a shell that can be filled with any excessive item you have around the house — from bottles and cans to old clothes or newspapers. He wanted to draw attention to the reality of trash, and how it can be reused. The chair was presented at the ICFF in New York this month, as part of the Sustainable Design For Mass Production exhibit. While I think the project works on a conceptual level, I can't imagine even the most eco-hippie communal homes filling their living room with such furniture.

For a video of Nick describing his project,

this would be a great way to store off-season clothes and bedding! i keep my winter comforter in a clear bag just like that anyway so if the chair back and arms could fit flannel sheets and a few sweaters it would be a useful piece in the closet instead of just a big bag taking up space.

It would be ok if filled with shredded paper or packing peanuts, but it looks pretty bad with just trash.

It's actually pretty cozy and not as gross as you think! (depending on what you put on it of course).

Ok, but it could totally be an outside chair! Especially if you throw a slipcover over it. Right?

I could just buy an inflatable chair for about $10 and fill it up with my own garbage. Anyway, it doesn't look comfy, so why even bother.
