Ikea is taking over the affordable kitchen renovation market with its adaptable layouts and stylish designs. The only design box the megaretailer's kitchens don't check off is uniqueness. Until recently, unique design finishes seemed reserved for the deep-pocketed — but a company called Semihandmade [3] is changing all that by selling handcrafted, one-of-a-kind cabinet doors specifically made to fit Ikea cabinets. Its designs work with both new and old Ikea kitchen systems, so you can create a high-end design look with Sektion from the get-go or give your old Akurum kitchen a facelift.
As you can imagine, business is booming. Semihandmade has outfitted almost 3,000 kitchens, bathrooms, closets, and media units since opening in 2011. Its cabinet door offerings include textured melamine made to match Ikea's materials, medium-density fiberboard (MDF) perfect for painting, stylish reconstituted veneers, and even reclaimed wood.
