Do You Buy Original Artwork?

Buying one-of-a-kind artwork is a very rewarding — if somewhat expensive — way to add character to your walls. Do you invest in original pieces?

i'm an artist myself and i put only my works on the walls. i had some gifts from friends-artists... but i feel it's an insult to my art.

I'm starting a painting class this fall so I'm hoping that I can come up with some big, high impact canvases of my own! I can't afford much original art at this stage in my life, but I do have a ton of creative and super talented friends. I always ask for art for them when it's gift time. I feel like it's even more personal when you know the artist.

I'm not really interested. I would like to have something that my friend has made but not anything I would have to pay for. I'm not huge on art, I'd rather have photos on the wall.

I paint my own things. It gives me something to do. My sister "commissions" me paint stuff for her too. People walk by her dorm and say it looks like a gallery because she took all my old paintings with her to school.

I wish I could afford original artwork and as chessy/dorm room-y as it sounds my hubby and I have some dali prints hung up. Actually part of what brought us together was mutal love for Dali.

Almost everything on my walls is original pieces, with a few smaller prints. Art fairs and craft fairs are great for finding unique pieces at a good price. You don't have to go with a name artist to find great art. I say go for whatever you like the look of, it will make your home unique.

I buy original artwork whenever I can. Fortunately, I live in a very artsy city, and artists are always selling their work at festivals and events. It really isn't always that expensive, especially if you buy photography pieces. I've also collected art from my travels. Street markets in Brazil are excellent for inexpensive paintings.

I try to but don't always have the $$... something I want to do when I'm rich someday!

I have a few I've bought from market stalls and second hand shops, and even better ones painted for me by my friends and family. It's not really that likely to increase in value (unless my friends get famous!) but it's so much nicer and more individual. My favourite original artwork I have up at the moment are some drawings my mum found at an antique shop. They are original fashion sketches from vogue magazine from way back when they didn't use photos all the time and they're gorgeous, and only £8-15 each!

We have a range of original pieces in different media... paintings (oil, watercolor), drawings, collage, sculpture -- although I'm not into photography). This was always where my "expendable" income went pre-marriage (small and inexpensive pieces) and now each year for our anniversary we add a new piece of art to our collection. It's nice to have something "shared" to commemmorate this special day. Also, now that I have children, I have been able to add to our collection w/ their original pieces!!! Having such a range of artists on display really makes our home a warm environment.

I hope to have some pieces when I eventually get my own place. My mother started painting a few years ago and she's gotten really good at it! She even done a few pieces on silk which are beautiful.

i really try to buy original artwork especially when i am away on vacation.. if there is nothing i can afford, i will buy street art specifically watercolor then get them framed. most major cities in the world have street vendors. what they paint may not be one of a kind since they usually paint scenic tourist attractions but at least it is original.

All my artwork is original; some is mine, others are not. It just gives more flavor to the place!

I browse through Etsy a lot and look at local artists on display. Fortunately, I have a few pieces that my grandmother painted that I plan to use in my next place.

I do all the time! We try to hit up the local galleries. The three Giant Robot Galleries (NY, SF, LA) have great shows. And if I'm in portland I have to hit up Compound gallery. Oh and right now I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jamie Zollars her stuff is so great, and the prints are really inexpensive (starts at $8, get them now before she gets famous!) Also, we do our own stuff, yumjimmy makes the best drawings!

I buy original art work and limited edition prints. But I'm a fine artist, so I also create original art work and limited edition prints!

The hubby is an artist so yeah, we support original art. We also buy prints too. Sometimes you just really love a piece and that's all you can get.

Yes, and note sugar gals and guys, original artwork doesn't always have to be expensive or beyond your range. I have collected pieces from my travels, I've framed some of my own photographs, I've collected pieces of both antique and folk art, so it is just a combination of pieces that caught my eye or that have been given to me as gifts. I love mixing my own photos with original pieces throughout my home; it keeps it interesting.
