Do You Have Wood Paneling?

If it's done right, wood paneling can add a sense of intimacy to a room; however, I think that its reputation has been compromised by the cheap paneling prevalent in homes in the '70s. Have you ever lived in a house with wood paneling? Source

We never had paneling on the walls (I was never a huge fan, but I have seen it done where it looks really nice) but we had wood paneled ceilings in my house growing up and it actually looks really, really nice.

Sorta. My parent's house has half walls of pine wood paneling in the entire first floor of the house. It was nicely done beadboard though, which doesn't scream 70s all that much like the flat planks of the picture above do.

The house I grew up in had ONE WALL paneled. That wall ran alongside the stairs, so when I sat on the stairs and leaned against the wall, my hair would get caught in the paneling. :p

Yes. When it's done well, it's quite lovely.

I bought my current home because I fell in love with the family room that is paneled beautifully with beautiful dark wood oak panels, with ceiling beams that match the paneling. For a family room it adds comfort and warmth when decorated appropriately. Your accessories and furniture don't have to be expensive if done right to create that cozy feeling. I bought everything at discount stores and created a look that fools even the sharpest eyes. Leather furniture, entertainment center, and a library of books (some are fake LOL) but it creates a look of comfort and coziness and I'm very happy with it.

My house has wood paneling in every room but the bathroom. And I love it. It was built in the mid '70's, the paneling is solid wood. It gives the rooms a warm feeling.

I grew up in a house with wood paneling. It was that way when my parents bought it and just never got around to taking it down. You get used to it though.

yeah gross in my last house. tacky 70's wood panel, just as tacky as the different carpet colored bedrooms, mine was dark bright red. who comes up with that?

My previous house had tacky, fake wood panelling. I filled all the grooves with wood putty, sanded, primed, & painted it. No one knew it used to be panelling.

I'd really love to see some of this paneling "done right". My parents have paneling in their living room (yes, they built the house in the 70s) and they love the darn stuff...but I hate it.

My parents' house has wood paneling in the basement and it's horrible. I hate it and am glad I do not have it in my home!

The house I grew up in had some wood paneling, but it was the real thing, not that awful laminate that they made later and no doubt still make today. The house I just sold had knotty pine in the kitchen and dining area half way up the wall. That was appropriate for the area as the house is in a resort area in NW lower Michigan and the house has a nice cottage feel to it. I think paneling can be ok if done right, but often times, it is done so wrong!

We actually do have some diagonally applied half panelling (like chair rail height) in our downstairs family room, in a very light, natural, rustic finish, and it's pretty modern looking. Out house is more contemporary, and the downstairs is mostly one big open space, so I think it looks pretty nice.

Yes, and I'm dealing with it for now. We just went with it and painted the paneling and bought some 70s furniture. Our long term goals are to put in french doors to the back patio and then put up drywall, but that's a ways down the road.

We have some painted paneling in our den - I assume it was wood-grain at one point. I wouldn’t say I love it, but I like the texture that the paneling seams give. It adds interest to a room that’s otherwise pretty bland, architecturally.
