Does Your Design Style Rule Your Love Life?

I recently caught a first season episode of Sex and the City, Bay of Married Pigs, where Charlotte dates a man on the marriage track, Sean. Not long after they begin dating, they find themselves looking at china patterns together, and Charlotte dumps him when she realizes his pattern of choice isn't up to her standards. Carrie narrates, "Charlotte ended it right then and there. It would never work. He was American Classic and she was French Country."
Since I've never been in this situation, I can't say I wouldn't have done the same thing, but it does seem a bit irrational. On the other hand, I can be quite stubborn when it comes to compromising my tastes in interior design.

Fortunately, my husband and I have fairly similar design tastes. We do butt heads here and there, but marriage in general is about compromise.

My husband and I remodeled our house and doubled the size. I was fairly certain our marriage wouldn't survive. He didn't want to paint ANY wood at all. NONE! I finally just did some one day while he was out and he pouted but now agrees that some painting is necessary to keep our place from looking like a dungeon. The house is pretty much my style now, he has 10 acres of OUTSIDE to do with what he will. Luckily he's a landscaper and it looks awesome:P

I think it was more of a metaphor, but what do I know.. anyway his china preference was god awful.. and Charlotte has exceptional taste, so she should have high standards..

Had you asked me back in the day, I would have laughed and said how superficial to not marry someone because of their design taste, but now that my husband and I are looking at houses and discussing renovations and furnishings, I have to say that compromise is hard. It's not that either of us dis-likes the other's style, it's just that it wouldn't be the first, second, or third thing we would pick out. All the "ehh", "meh", and "nah"'s grate on your last nerve sometimes, not to mention not being able to play out your vision and ending up with a home full of compromises.

We all know Char is a little off... But I mean the style of the home is important. I would like a guy whos style meshes well with mine, but it's not a complete deal breaker. Plus aren't there shows on HGTV to solve this problem?
