After throwing your wife an Italian wedding fit for royalty, the only extravagant purchase capable of surpassing it is a private island. George Clooney and his new bride, influential lawyer-activist Amal Alamuddin, have purchased a historic English manor nestled upon a private island for $12 million. Overlooking the River Thames, the 5.5-acre island is a part of Sonning Eye, a village where Clooney filmed scenes for The Monuments Men . . . and apparently fell in love with the scenery!
The luxe 17th century estate has nearly 9,000 square feet of space and 10 bedrooms, which will be perfect if the impressive couple decides to start a family. Its former owner, financier Omar Bayoumi, outfitted the property with plenty of high-tech upgrades and modern luxuries during his time in Sonning-on-Thames, so the Clooneys will have no trouble feeling at home in their new home. However, if they begin to get stir-crazy in the tiny village, they can escape to one of George's other impressive properties: a luxurious Mexican beach compound, an Italian mansion, and a sprawling Los Angeles estate.
