Gift Guide: The Newlyweds

Newlyweds are generally the easiest people to shop for because they want anything and everything for their homes. Having a registry to shop from doesn't hurt either. But, I try to stay away from the registries and get a little more creative with my newlywed gifts. In general, try to choose something with a little color and charm that'll keep their new home together from looking and feeling plain vanilla. No white serving platters allowed! But remember, you're not shopping for your own tastes. So, you may have to go with some salt-glazed stoneware for your more traditional friends. I've rounded up a few gifts at various price points that will be sure to please even the most boring newlyweds you know.

As someone that JUST got engaged (yea!!) I agree w/ the other posters that said to stick w/ the registry. The items may not be super exciting or fun to those buying, however, it is what they want. If you want to do something diff't- I would suggest including a receipt or giving it as a bday or holiday gift instead.

I love my newlywed friends. I think I am getting them a champ stopper w/ their initials (because my girl LOVES herself the champ & you never want to waste a lovely bottle)

Aw, this is me and my husband! We just got married in August. I love all these finds and appreciate all of the gifts we've gotten. I do agree with Julieulie though, using a couples' leftover wedding registry is a great way to pick out gifts for them.

Cute ideas. I'm gonna be an early thirties newlywed real soon and I am not too big on random stuff for the home from folks unless they know us real well or its edible. I got an amazing haul of walnuts last year that lasted us through spring.

As a newlywed, I have to say I would love to get any of these! Sadly, I don't think any of my friends or family are clever enough to get us cool home stuff, so we'll probably getting the usual t-shirts and holiday cookies. Oh well, guess I'll just have to save up for my own high-end scrabble set.

From the point of purchasing wedding gifts, or in the case of newlyweds who still have a lot left on their registry come the holidays, unless you know them REALLY well, you're much better off purchasing from the registry. They know their tastes and what they want, and if it wouldn't work in their home, they wouldn't have registered for it. A lot of people shopped off our registry for our engagement party and while a few people found things that we LOVE, we wound up with a lot of stuff that doesn't match our tastes AT ALL and we can't figure out where it came from to return it. We live in a teeny tiny condo and we don't have room for this stuff, and sadly we had to basically give away or throw out some expensive gifts, because we don't even have room to store it while hoping someone will buy it on eBay. We felt awful about it, but we don't like it, and can't put it anywhere, and we are certainly not going to rent a storage unit somewhere to hold stuff we don't even want.
