PS: I know that location was a big consideration, but what made you take that leap of faith when the place just was such a disaster?
ES: You know, I've always lived in the area, and I really, really love it. Also, I hate living in small spaces! I like to have a big space that I can move around in or just be away from whoever is in my house with me. Sometimes you just need 10 minutes — very important! And this place is the only way I could do it and afford it. The duplex was 4,500 square feet, which is huge. A house that size, that you would actually want to live in, would have cost some crazy amount of money, and I couldn't afford that. So I was like, I'll buy a duplex and work at the shreds and, you know, hope for the best.
