How to Buy a Persian Rug

10 Things to Know Before Buying a Persian Rug

Everyone loves the look of a Persian rug but it's hard to know where to start when shopping for one. To help demystify the process, we asked Aram Amidi of Medallion Rugs about what he thinks is the important during the process. As someone who has been around rugs since he was a toddler — his grandfather started the family business — Aram knows what really matters when it comes to buying a Persian area rug. Here are his top 10 tips!

  1. Don't be nervous!
  2. Look at a rug for what it is: art.
  3. Be sure to touch and feel the rug. It won't break.
  4. Look at it from all angles. You notice different things when you change your viewpoint.
  5. Ask as many questions as you want! Ask about the history of the rug, where it's from, how long it took to weave, what materials it's made of, etc. In other words, get to know the history.
  6. No matter how many questions you ask, don't feel pressured to buy.
  7. Choose multiple options and keep an open mind. Something may look good in the gallery but not in your home.
  8. Don't try and get too "matchy." Sometimes the best way to highlight a room is to use an area rug as an accent.
  9. Ask around and do your homework when looking for a gallery. It's worth it to find good customer service.
  10. Choose what speaks to your heart! If you go over your budget, look at it as an investment.
