Create a Cozy Reading Nook With 4 Simple Tips

Not every home comes with a spot dedicated to reading, but that doesn't mean you can't create one. When we saw Instagram user sewitpretty's reading nook in this #CasaSnap, we were automatically inspired; with just a few details and organizational tricks, she created a cozy space to crack open a good book. Follow these four simple steps, and you can too.

  • Find the right spot. Maybe it's an awkward corner you're not sure what to do with or the space overlooking a window, but the good thing is that you can create a reading nook in just about any room — even a kitchen. Just make sure that wherever you set up, it's away from loud or distracting noise like that coming from a TV.
  • Provide seating and lighting. It's a basic essential, but seating for any reading nook can come in different forms: a sofa, a built-in bench, or a grandfather chair. It might depend on how much space you have, but it's important to know that seating in this case can even be created by floor cushions. Be sure to supply lighting (these floor lamps are great options) so you can flip pages well after the sun sets.
  • Up the comfort factor. There are a couple ways you can make your reading nook feel comfortable: one is by adding cozy elements like pillows and throws so bookworms can relax. Another is by giving the space a homey feel with details; we really like how this user added photos and a letter monogram for a personalized touch.
  • Don't forget about storage. With all the books you'll be reading, you'll need a place to keep them. Re-create this user's nook with a similar one that's actually a children's bench. She was also smart to provide a basket for magazine lovers.
