How to Decide Rug Size

Casa Quickie: Cut a Rug With Newspapers

When it comes to deciding what size rug to get and where to put it, I truly think a picture is worth a thousand words. And while looking at other examples is great, seeing what it will look like in your own room, with your own furniture, is even better.

To visualize what the rug will look like in your home, grab some old newspapers, adhesive tape, and measuring tape. Lay the papers out flat and, using the measuring tape, create the sizes you're debating between, affixing them with the adhesive tape so they are easy to move around. Once you have your "newspaper rugs," start playing around with where they'd go in the room and different furniture configurations. Be sure to take photos along the way for future reference. Throw the photos in your portable design journal and you'll be prepared if you come across a blowout rug sale!

Do you have any other tips for figuring out the best rug size for a space? Please share in comments!

I worded that terribly. I meant "I never would have thought of this!"
