How Would You . . .

I love to use traditional home accents in nontraditional places, as do many interior designers. Based on that concept, I'm introducing a new Casa feature called How Would You . . . that asks you to think outside the home-decorating box and find alternate uses for traditional home accents and furniture pieces.

How would rework these cast-iron greyhound andirons so they served a different decorating or practical function in your home? Andirons are horizontal iron bars upon which logs are laid for burning in an open fireplace. However, I'd like to know how you could see these employed in an alternate use in your home.

Leave a comment below and let me know where you'd put these art deco-era andirons into your home.

I like the shoe rack idea.

msdyanelk LOL, I was thinking I would put them in the closet! They kind of resemble insects. Greyhound certainly did not jump out at me. Since they look so darn sturdy, I suppose one could weld two circular rings at the top and bottom to create an umbrella or fireplace tools holder.

these would be cool as throw blanket holders. Roll the throw blankets and lay them like you would logs.

Hmm....these might work well for holding larger mags like Rolling Stone or Billboard....or extra books....repainted silver.

I would use them (depending on their weight) as door stoppers.

In a really big kitchen with lots of counter space, these could make for a pretty great cooling rack. Truth be told, I'm totally digging JessNess' ottoman and VSangeIMichelle's bed legs so much I'd probably do either or both of them before making a cooling rack. Awesome ideas!

i have no clue if this would work out, but i'd get 4 and use them to hold up my bed!

I would put down a piece of wood and use it as a shoe rack in an entry way. These look like they could withstand a beating from dirty shoes.

I just had another idea I would get two more (again). Make a box upholstered in a nice fabric and padding. In the position they are now I would place the box so that the iron decoration was at the corners and I would have made myself an ottoman

I would probably get two more and flip them over and use as table legs. I would have a glass top so you could see the iron

I would probably paint a piece of plyboard and put it on them and then use it to hold magazines.

OMG, these andirons are kickass.

Totally boring, but I'd put them in the fireplace. It's the focal point of my living room and these awesome puppies would really stand out in there! Too bad those are likely out of my price range! I think they might be even better if it was a rear if the dogs were watching the fire. If I put them elsewhere, I'd probably flank my main doorway and put two large potted plants directly behind them like sweetpeabrina suggested.

I would use these to flank and/or hold a large round planter or even a long, shallow, rectangular planter. They are a really interesting piece.

I'd actually rework these by throwing them in the nearest trash dumpster! They are certainly that hideous.

I'd paint them with Rustoleum in some funky color and try to incorporate them into a garden.

i don't know how tall they are, but i think they'd make really cool table legs, either for like a coffee table or a sidebar!
