How to Make an Ikea Dresser Look Like a Midcentury Splurge

Jan 15 2017 - 5:35pm

The dilemma: midcentury minimalism is the inspiration behind your 2017 bedroom revamp [1], but the struggle to bring home a period knock-off, let alone something authentic, is just too real. The solution: hack it. Now, the inner design snob in you might be resistant to this. You may think your Ikea phase is over, but you're wrong. Let me tell you why.

When interior designer, house flipper and blogger Kristina Lynne [2] began her budget-friendly bedroom makeover, she knew the West Elm dresser [3] ($999) she loved was just too expensive. So she turned to an old Ikea faithful, the affordable, always-in-stock Tarva dresser [4] ($249). Its pine wooden shell makes customization a piece of cake, so Kristina coated it with a crisp white paint, stained and cut the legs at a diagonal for some midcentury flair, and found perfectly-shaped knobs that just needed some brass spray paint. Brilliant, yes?

To peep Kristina's handy work in all its glory, along with her instructions and resources for knobs, brass spray paint, and the perfect white, check out her post for the full Ikea dresser hack [5]! For even more Ikea dresser transformations, browse our eight favorite Ikea dresser DIYs [6]!
