Red4ev that sounds amazing. You should post some pics. I'd love to see the result!

we have a large formal staircase, and when we moved we just started stacking the books up the stairs as we unpacked them...its super cute and it makes our formal stairs look comfy like the rest of our house

In one of the funniest books I've ever read, Ex Libris, author Anne Fadiman expresses genuine horror that anyone could organize *books* based on the covers with no thought to the content. Has anybody else read Ex Libris?

I just did this and I LOVE it!

I love this idea, but I'd need a long (sturdy!) shelf for the full effect. Currently, my books are sorted by topic.

My books are in order by series and genre. Then by author's last name. That actually would drive me crazy--- the colors, I'd never know where to look to find ones.

I kinda try to keep all my books ordered by size... so it sort of makes 'stairs' on my shelves... however I got too many books, and of all sizes, it gets pretty messed up after a few days! And don't tell me about magazines!

Wow, I really like that but I've never thought about doing it that way. My books are in alphabetical order.

i like it, i like the randomness it brings. chaotic but fun. yeah i guess i'm one of the weird ones.

I like this idea as well, it seems so fun. For my part, I have far too many books to squeeze onto my shelves. I mostly keep them grouped by genre and then again by author.

Vienvien - you must have misintepreted my quote. In no way did I mean to cause offense. I guess it's hard to express nuance over the internet! No hard feelings, I hope?

yeah thats a lot of books...i`m going to try this since we`ve just moved and haven`t really finished sorting things anyways but i dont think it will look that great since my books are few and my book case is a more standard style... looks worth a try though=)

Wow I wish I just HAD this many books, no matter how they're arranged!

I organize my books by language, genre, period and author. The color-idea is beautiful but only accectable if one uses a bookshelf only as decor and not to actually organise his books.

It's kinda cute but I'd feel too anal if all my books were organized by color or size. Mine are organized by author for the most part.

i love this idea. It's not practical if you are always searching for books, but I still love the way it looks.

I don't like having my books on display, it's too personal.

oh, i forgot to say that i have my books in some categories and then alphabetically: fiction home decor/architecture art history science and nature/environment biographies cookbooks anthropology/First nations studies

what are you people talking about? ahh...i'd go crazy if my books weren't arranged alphabetically! i think we have about 400 total so it'd be so hard to find anything!

I love this look. Its art.

the history major in me can't appreciate this. I like to sort my books by topic, then either geograpically or chronologically. color and height aren't really considerations, though the rainbow effect is quite pretty.
