Midday Muse: Shag Carpet-Printed Linoleum

Warning: do not try this at home. Shag carpet-printed linoleum. Four words you never want to hear together. In the case of Adam, who is fixing his 19th-century house, not only are those words familiar, but they are ever present with each glance at the floor of his bedroom and closet. In some slip of sanity, a company actually produced shag carpet-printed linoleum and someone willingly nailed it to their floor above what were likely once-beautiful hardwood floors. To say that I am wowed by this would be a drastic understatement; I think I am in shock. I cannot fathom how this has happened. Did the previous owner hate to vacuum? I'd love to know if any of you out there actually like this linoleum. And, what about you? Are there any decorating sins left from previous residents of your home?

That is so horrible! We've found some doozies in our house 3 layers of painted over wallpaper...ugh. Some of the bottom wallpapers were pretty neat though! : )

I think it's ugly but I really don't understand the obsession people have with hardwood floors.I don't find those particularly attractive either and they're such a waste of money. I like big ceramic tiles :) My parents house has this yellow wallpapering in the hallways. I think it matches b/c there's some faux paneling and dark wood accents in the hallway. I also don't understand why people hate wallpaper and automatically label it as being 'outdated'. It can look cute if it matches with the room.

That is just hilarious to me. That seems like something that would have come in a 1970s trailer. You don't get to pick the floor or the pattern on the walls.

People are so crazy. We are in the process of house hunting and let me tell you there are some strange people in the world. I wouldn't be surprised if we found that floor in one of the house we will be looking at. HA One house used the this pink flower wall paper to cover everything chair, bed, desk, dresser, I mean everything. YOu almost couldn't see the furniture because it blended into the wall. it was crazy!

Casa - sadly, no...she doesn't have it. This was an old apartment of hers in Michigan that she left behind, oh...20 years ago? But it will live on in my memories FOREVER. :)

Wow, all of these wallpaper and carpet nightmares make me wonder who's going to be pulling up our favorite wall and floor coverings in the future!

Before I moved to Finland, I had an 1880s home in Scotland that I renovated. The older fellow that lived there was alone when we bought it, but it had been their family home since the 1960s, previously owned by 2 women that ran a care home, and before that, it sort of gets lost in time up to the original owner/builder. It was a mixed bag of luck..on the one hand, little had been done to the house over the years other than just covering up what had already been done, so we were spared massive layers of asbestos-containing ceiling coverings...but there were layers upon layers of wallpaper and ugly carpeting/lino to pull up from the past...and in one room, he had used watered-down lemon paint on a deeply textured wallpaper covering, then tried to put in a tartan border. Och, noo! :P What I remember hating the most was the PADDED, QUILTED, foambacked floral wallpaper that coated almost EVERYTHING...and was terribly hard to remove, in the entire kitchen, and hallway off of it. That..was..vile.

Wow this is worse than the actual avocado green shag carpet in my brothers room growing up lol... Although I agree he should save a piece for posterity sake. We had carpet in our kitchen when I was growing up when I was a teen my parents finally removed it and tiled the kitchen. The wallpapers in that house though - oh my.. the bathroom originally had a metallic paper with various shades of pink in a grid pattern -it matched the pink and grey 1-inch tiles that were all over the countertop and backsplash. the living room had orange flocked wallpaper with a golden green color foil on the unflocked parts in a fleur de lis type of pattern lol... oh and when our black dog would lay on the floor against the wall he'd leave hair all over it - that was fun to clean.. ahh the memories ;-)

oh my. that's horrible! but I really hope he saves just one peice for posterity. it would be a cool conversation peice. :) my parents' second home had 70's wallpaper like you've never seen. my room was flowery, pretty normal. one room had green and orange plaid, and the master bath had green plaid with large purple roses. the living room had orange plaid with silver accents in the plaid. whew. needless to say they had it all taken out before we moved in. :)

My last year in college, I rented a house with some friends and two of us took the pool house. Half the room was painted red and the other half was yellow (like a mustard yellow) so it was dubbed "The McDonald's Wing" because that's exactly what it felt like. To make things worse, whoever was craving a Big Mac while painting the walls didn't use primer or painters tape or anything so you could see the BRIGHT royal blue underneath the red and yellow in patches and at the top of the wall. The only thing more sinful? My roommate and I were too lazy to actually paint over all that mess. :/

Delia- you must take photos of your grandma's carpet! Does she still have it?

Distressingly, I really, really love this. I have a soft spot for faux textures like this. Similarly, I've been obsessed with my grandma's old the hallway it looked like bricks (textured even! to create the illusion of real bricks!) and her living room looked like hardwood planks, complete with a "bent nail." Hilarious!

That is seriously crazy! In my apartment now, they shingled my bathroom window shut and made shelves there instead (weird) and they also painted all the nice wood molding over the doors and stuff. What a shame :(

HOTT! Haha. I would puke if I found that. The previous owners of our home had a GREAT eye for design, but my parents found bright purple carpet fibers when they were redoing their house. The previous owners had a business with purple as a signature color (at one point the front door was purple too.)

I kind of love it. In the right kind of retro/kitschy (but not too cluttered!) house, it could look awesome.
