Midday Muse: Vast Bath

In this Tuscan farmhouse, the architect designed the bathroom like a lounge, blending styles and eras as you might a living room. The old clawfoot tub is centered in front of the window for a relaxing view, and there's little else, aside from a tall cabinet shelving essentials and an armchair, to clutter up the space. While the blue walls and tub, terracotta tiles, and rustic copper faucet certainly create a beautiful palette, it's not the style or color of the room that attracts me — it's the size. I'd easily sacrifice some square footage in my bedroom or living room to claim this vast bath.Of course the cool tones create a soothing atmosphere, but the room's magnitude puts me in a happy place. In most homes, our bathrooms are not much bigger than a coat closet, and there's something so claustrophobic about that. I suppose in a way the composition of our homes speaks to what we value in our society; in most cases, our garages and living rooms are the largest spaces. Are cars and TV what's most important? Sometimes I think we need to reassess. Forget prime time, if I were the owner of this home, I'd take a nice long soak and curl up with a book in this private retreat any day.

Excellent point, gabiushka. Although having a larger bathroom is by no means a priority of mine, there is something so luxurious about having all that space to dream away the time, whether while taking a hot bubble bath or sitting at the vanity. So glam, too.

I adore clawfoot tubs! So beautiful.

Ah, it's lovely. I had friends that set up their upstairs bathroom similar to this. They had a backdrop of potted cacti, all different heights and sizes, and it was soooo pretty.

I love the bathroom. I'm definitely going to invest in a great soaking tub and lots of room with windows when my husband and I get our own home. I also love the idea of a separate make up/hair table with it's own window and seat. Fighting for the sink/mirror area in the morning puts of to the wrong start, plus, it just seems so much more glamorous.

I can see your point but I think having tvs in a living room is more of a choice, that room certainly existed way before tvs existed, as well as having garages since you could have a car you don't mind leaving outside. The reason why bathrooms are small in most homes is that they are for the most part a place of 'disposal': we go in there to rid ourselves of what we don't need whether it is dirt or others; they are small because we spend very little of our days in them. Any way I don't intend to go further on my theories about houses but that is one of my passions.

that is such a beautiful bath. With candles lit all over that room it would be totally romantic!
