Open House: Do You Decorate With Family Photos?

TeamSugar member Lexichloe recently wrote to me with an interesting question, which I had to share with you. She said, "I have an aunt who has a very modern, contemporary styled house. The first time I visited, I was in awe of the simplicity of it all. I then realized that the reason it was so simplistic was due to the lack of knickknacks and, more specifically, pictures. She comes from a close-knit, beautiful family. I was surprised at the absence of family pictures. Maybe you could ask the Casa community if they've ever been to a house that had no pictures in view."

So, readers, have you visited a home that didn't display family photos? I know that family photos are a must at my house, but what about yours? Do you have friends or relatives that banish photos to albums? Tell me by commenting below!

It wasn't until I read this post that I realized... I don't have a single family photo displayed in my apartment! Not one picture of friends, family, or even myself. Weird.

We have photos up in the house. I hate having all these mismatched frames and little frames that my Mom buys for me so I buy my own frames and hang them up. Other photos go in albums.

My own home will probably be like that. Maybe just 1 or 2 or something, but I wouldn't over do it..especially since its just me and my parents (no siblings). Not that many pictures to be taken anyway :B

Oh yes, I have photos of my family, my closest friends, and my kitties all over my home on display! I also have several photo albums, but I prefer to display my favorites.

I personally don't display photos of family in any of my rooms with exception to some albums on the computer and bookcase. It makes the room seem cluttered and I rather keep the house neat. Its not that I don't love my friends and family, they are always around visiting anyways but if I miss them I can always pull my album out or call them up.

i only know 1 person that doesn't have photos around.. I have a wall of funny or B&W family photos in silver frames, scattered surrounding a retro silver clock. its a conversation piece in my orange living room!!

we just moved in in late april and so far have 2 pictures up in the house--an old photo booth strip on the fridge and one of my dad and me that I happened to give my dad for father's day and got a framed copy for myself. Sadly it's just the digital age--I can't figure out a way to print out photos and have the prints stay nice and then frame and display them. I think we'll probably throw up some wedding/engagement photos when we get them but we're more Flickr people than frame people.

Right now I have 2 family photos displayed in my bedroom. It's not a reflection of being a cold person or not loving my family - I've tons of photos arranged in my photoboxes that I enjoy sharing and looking at. I don't find it odd that people wouldn't have family photos up and I do have several friends that don't display them. I guess what I find odd is making a judgment that someone doesn't care for you or isn't a warm or friendly person based on not having family photos out. A person's home is meant to be personal and arranged to suit them. When I had a very demanding position with a creative agency, I had nothing on my walls because I was so tired of looking at visuals and graphics all day long at work. This made my space feel peaceful and relaxing to me at that time. Now I have a few things that I love up and maybe that will change some more when I move into a new place.

My hubby and I have a very contemporary feel to our house and dont have a lot of family photos out at all. There are lots of photos in our cozy office, and our computers' screen savers are always slideshows of family photos, but we dont have a lot out. That will likely change once we have kids though - I am sure my living room will still be sparse, but the tv room and bedroom will have tons.

My mom has a few out, not many -- but a lot of albums! My fiance and I don't have any in our apartment. I'd rather have some nice art on the walls, or flowers on the tables than just stuff that doesn't really add anything aesthetic to the house. I am all about the aesthetics of my house!

Up until last week we didn't have any photos up in our house -- my hubby and I aren't formal framed-photo type people. But we did finally put some up -- we used cork squares to make a grid in the hallway and pinned up some snapshots. Way less formal, and a big hit for the family BBQ we hosted.

Well my spouse insists on family photos being on the second floor only. The first floor, living room, dining room, is to have artwork only. I find it a bit less welcoming but not worth the fight. lol

My parents had very few photos up - in contrast to all my friends' houses where there were photos all over the walls. So I always felt a bit neglected, and you better believe in my house there will be tons of photos of my kids (when they come along). There's a way to do it with some style. We're thinking of doing a photo wall - lots of plain black frames in different sizes with photos of our families, going back several generations. So not just photos as filler/clutter, but sort of an installation. Photos don't have to mean clutter - and lack of photos is definitely not lack of clutter (see: my parents' house ... God love 'em but they are clutterbugs, photos or no).

I don't know of any home that is completely void of family photos. I do have a friend with a photography business on the side. She only displays pictures she herself has taken.

Yes, my husband's aunt has a nice contemporary appmnt with no photos in sight. I kind of like it. I would only hang photos that are beautiful/artsy otherwise why bother putting them up? Maybe when we have our own place I might change my mind.

My mother doesn't like family pictures throughout the house at all, especially in the living room. She does have a LOT of family pictures in the home office; that's where she likes to keep them. My bf's mom, on the other hand, has family portraits in every room of their home. I keep ours in a long glass accent table on our entryway.

One of my sisters actually doesn't have any pics in her home and we're a large family. I'm guessing a lot of people don't want to be bothered by dusting and updating the photos most of the time.

yes, my mother is like that. she keeps very few photos out, and none of herself. it's mostly because she doesn't like pictures of herself, and also because she doesn't like clutter. She has a tall chest of drawers full of them so I know she looks at them. I'm kind of the same way. I have a handfull out that I change periodically. I just don't like little frames sitting out all over the place. one or two in a room seems to do it for me! But I do keep an album within easy reach.

My mother actually doesn't display family photos at her house- she used to but then she got into impressionist art reprints and replaced me and my sister smiling from her walls, it seems mean but my sis and I just laugh it off.
