Painting a 1960s Faux Bamboo Thomasville Dresser

Before and After: My 1960s Bamboo Dresser

Perusing a thrift store in San Francisco recently, I stumbled upon this 1960s faux bamboo dresser by Thomasville . . . on sale for only $69! Not only was its price unbelievable — today a Thomasville dresser retails for $1000-$2000 — but it was love at first sight. Hollywood Regency is so my style! It also offered lots of storage, and its length made it a perfect fit for my entry hall, where I was in desperate need of a console table. The only trouble was that its retro mustard color had to go. I'm sure someone could pull it off, but that hue was not for me. The tabletop also had a terrible white laminate that was beyond dated. So into the car the dresser went, and my next stop was the paint shop!
Want to see how I turned this retro dresser into something ravishing?

I'd recently become smitten with the color persimmon, and picked up a pair of throw pillows accented with the reddish orange hue for my living room. I also wanted to paint the dresser a lively color that would pop against my foyer's oyster-colored walls. So, I chose a persimmon-esque swatch, Benjamin Moore's Starburst Orange, pretty much on a whim.

I chose a semi-gloss finish to give it a little shine, and had the store clerk tint my primer to make the process a little speedier. Most of the dresser needed two coats of primer and one coat of semi-gloss to top it off, but the slick laminate needed a bit more primer. As for the hardware, I kept them as-is, white with a bit of patina. I love the contrast of the white drawer pulls against the rich orange, and I think it gives it a bit of a tropical look.

What do you think? Like it? Have you done any of your own painting or decorating projects lately? Be sure to post photos and tales in the Su Casa group!

Did you have to sand it or anything prior to painting? I am new to painting furniture and wanted to make sure I was on the right path before ruining it!

I love the Persimmon color that you used in your dresser. It looked really new. You must have love that dresser so much the moment you saw it from the flea market!

That color looks great! My mom had this same yellow faux bamboo Thomasville set growing up which was passed on to me when I was a kid and I have now passed it along to my daughter. It's been painted 3 or 4 times - white, mint green and back to white again - and has several sets of knobs as well. My daughter has the night stand, an armoire, desk and 2 piece bookshelf. Such a pretty set!

Sweet paint job, I have the same set and I'm considering painting it a light charcoal grey or white. Love seeing what other people have done with the same set. Anybody know of lead concerns with the paint on these since they're from the 60s? After inhaling a bunch of dust sanding one of the nightstands, I considered I better do a little research....

I just purchased the Thomasville full faux bamboo headboard, lingerie chest, end table, desk, and chair last Tuesday of Craig's List. It was listed as a full bedroom set with almost new pillowtop mattress, box spring, and frame all included for $250.00. I assumed it was a generic set and was so excited when I opened the drawer on the chest and seen it was Thomasville. I have been researching all day to find out what collection, and when I seen your post of your dresser, I knew what collection I have. Your painting it persimmon, has given me so many ideas. Cannot wait to change the darker wood to something more suited for my room. Need something Beachy looking since I am living across from the Gulf now! I just love Treasures and feel that I have found one!

Wow! I think there's a time and place to post disagreements (matters of morality, politics, favorite sandwich shop, etc), but not sure it's necessary to be so nasty over something as harmless as a dresser. Yikes! I thought it was a cute piece.

Sure will Casa. I am looking for something to "makeover" for our room. We have a totally mismatched "pieced together" room right now. But I don't like paying a lot of money for something new, when I know we can do it ourselves!

Love it Casa. I went second hand shopping this weekend. I only found one dresser I liked, and it was 120 dollars! Who sells something second hand for that much! I think I'm going to stick to garage sales this spring and summer!
