CS: What is the history of the building where the hotel is located?
CT: The Meier & Frank Department Store was once one of the largest retail outlets west of the Mississippi. Long before the “big boxes” homogenized retail Meier & Frank was “the” place to shop, to be and be seen in Portland. It was the kind of place that one would go for lunch and high tea. It was built in three different phases in 1908, 1915, and 1938 with various rooftop additions. With its terra cotta skin and situated at Pioneer Square in downtown Portland, the building is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and stands sentry in the epicenter of Portland’s retail corridor.
