Preppy Green Guest Room Makeover

Before and After: My Groovy Green Guest Room

When I moved into my house, I wasn't quite sure what color to use in my guest bedroom so I went for a seemingly safe sky blue hue. While it worked for a while, I never fell in love with the room. Perhaps it was that it became a bedroom/office/sewing mashup that made the space so unattractive or maybe it was the overhead pipes that clutter the basement ceiling. Either way, I knew there was more potential but the cork had just not popped in my mind until I feasted my eyes on the perfect color green. After my eureka moment, I ran to the paint store, found fabulous fabric, and got to work.

I love the color! I like that you chose if for a guest room/work room! It's not something you see everyday, which keeps it fresh, fun and inspiring (for those sewing projects)!

I love the bed and don't mind that it's big :) A guest room isn't a design show room, give your guests the biggest comfy bed in town--what more could they want?!?! And the fact that it is a family heirloom, wonderful! Wayyy too gorg to have in storage just to replace with a flimsy bed frame or some sort. As for the TV it would be nice to have on in the background when you are working. We got my dad a small flat screen around Christmas for his work room and they are SO CHEAP (like 100? 150?) around then, look for deals around Thanksgiving and it could be an awesome compromise!

Well I love that color! I love that bed! I love the separation you created with those beautiful curtains! My only problem is the is a little small and outdated.

I love the bed, especially juxtaposed against the more modern green walls and fur rugs.

I LOVE this color green. I wonder if my husband will agree to some bold color choices like this in our future home? Great job reinventing the space. I love how the green works with the natural baskets and the warm color of the floor.

I love the punch of color, I feel renergized just by looking at the room. Great job Casa.

I love it! Maybe the bed would be too large according to the normal rules of design, but I actually think it works here. The oversized bed and chair make the space feel cozy, which would normally be hard to achieve when using such a bright color on the walls.

I didn't even notice that t.v. the color was so amazing it blocked it out! I think this looks great and would be excited to sleep here!

May I come stay at your house Casa?? That room is great! It is very inviting for guests and I bet it makes you happy while sewing. BTW,I didn't even notice the TV until I read the comments.

Ha! I guess I better get rid of that tv! The old owners left it and I just haven't taken it down because, to be honest, it's great to swivel around when I'm sewing or doing a craft project. Maybe when I want to splurge, I'll add a flat screen. Until then, my boarders will have to endure the hospital look.

I like the option of the tv being in the guest room. This allows me as a guest to watch a bit of tv if I choose as I get ready for bed or if I wake before others without disturbing the rest of the house. I like the bed it would make me feel like a queen and last but not least I love the color combo (but I love green).

I like the room. It's really bright for a basement space and very cheery. My only problem with the room - that tv. It reminds me of a hospital just like Skigurl said and that is never inviting. I recommend you get a flat screen, place it on the side table, or remove it entirely.

That is a gutsy colour, but it looks quite good. On first glance Miami comes to mind.

I agree with most of what's been said. From a design standpoint, I do think the bed is too large, but it is lovely and I understand why you're using it. I agree with SanDiegoLove regarding the tv. Other than those two minor gripes, I love the room! The curtains make a huge difference and the color is amazing.

That bed is huge, but it's quite inviting. I don't mind it :). The color is great and I love the punchy curtains. Great idea for hiding the sewing/office space. The TV is a bit odd. I almost think you don't need one. We took the tiny one out of our guest room because it seemed so out of place.

First of all, I LOVE your commitment of color, even if it's not everyone's favorite. I LOVE the family heirloom bed...I'm sure it makes your guests FEEL special when they stay, and it looks comfy too! Also LOVE the curtain division between the spaces. Although spending more money on upgrades and changes might be nice, I feel what you did gave more bang for the bucks, and I bet your guests spend more time with YOU anyway. Where are the positive comments people? A pat on the back for you, Casa!

Skigurl, you are so right about that bed! It's a family heirloom though so I can't get rid of it. And, it's so pretty that I hate to put it in storage. And yes, it was a ballsy color! ;)
skigurl skigurl 7 years
oh yah and the TV really takes away from the adorable feel of the room. For $300 we bought a 21" flat screen and for another 80$ we bought a mount and it's on our wall now and looks WAY cooler than the hospital bed set up you have going on.
skigurl skigurl 7 years
wow, that's a really ballsy color. I do like it a lot, but I think the thing I don't like the most about the room is the proportion of the furniture. That bed is huge under normal standards - it's too big in a basement bedroom with such low ceilings. and that chair is also huge. It just makes the space seem jammed up unnecessarily. A low bed and small chair would really help. But i like the idea of it, and since you have to use the space also as a sewing room, I like the separation using the curtains.
