CS: I adore the countertops on your kitchen bar. Tell me about some of the salvaged materials in your kitchen.
JP: I love my countertop too! That was something I had to fight for. The builder, cabinetmaker, and even my husband was hesitant to build an island top from vintage wood and leave it with its bumps and all. But I knew it would look great if I found the perfect wood. And we did . . . in a farmer's field in the middle of Winter. We uncovered it, brought it into the farmer's barn, sanded it down a little to see the true color and bam — that was it! Other salvaged goodies in my kitchen include the commercial refrigerator that I picked up at a recycle center — which was a true score! The old schoolhouse clock was from the same recycle shop.
