Simple Style: Chalkboard Paint

Whether you have kids or you just like the idea of writing on the wall, chalkboard paint like this one from Rust-Oleum is a fun and funky way to liven up a wall, a cabinet, or any patch of blank space where you need to jot down notes.

Available in green or black — I love the green for its retro schoolroom feel — the paint turns any wall into a writable and erasable surface. Because it works on wood, metal, glass, and plastics, it's incredibly versatile. Paint a patch of it on your office wall, or resurface the front of your fridge.

Of course, it's great for kids' rooms, but rather than cover an entire wall, why not use this idea from Real Simple and create cool silhouette, such as a house- or tree-shaped chalkboard?

You know what would also be cute is to trace the shape of your child's body on the wall and make a silhouette that your kid can customize (clothes, faces, etc). I need to remember this when I have my own place.

My husband and I just did this to our daughters room over the weekend. He did almost the whole wall...but made it look as if it was in a "wavy" frame. We bought her the big Crayola colored chalk for it. It works great.....the family can't stay out of her room....everyone wants to draw on her wall.

I really like this idea for a kid's room. I never thought about putting it in a shape like that. I like it a lot.

I actually painted the centers of my kitchen cabinets with this paint then drew a child verson of what was actually in that cabinet. The white and great of the cabinets is a great contrast to the "Red Hot" Collor that I painted my kitchen walls. I got the idea from the Pottery Barn Catalogue. My husband likes to leave me love notes on the cabinets when he is really feeling sweet.

just hope the kid can stay in the lines of that silhouette.

When I painted a chalkboard on my daughter's room wall, she just went mad about it!! She and her little sis enjoy so much playing school teachers ;) So, it is ok but maybe not in the bedroom for children affected with asthma (because of chalkdust).

my mom did this at her daycare. it was so much fun going over there. i would think t do this in my own home but i am too paranoid about all the chalk dust.

I liked the idea that someone brought up...using cookie sheets and the chalkboard paint to make portable chalkboards.

this would have been very useful for my parents while I was a kid! My father - who's an architect - and my mom - a communications, publicity and graphic design major - used to have a wall in the house that we used to call "the paint wall" and we could draw, paint, etc in it... now that I'm studying architecture I have one in my apartment, but I think I'll add some stripes with this!!

We updated our kitchen last fall and used this but also took it one step further and magnetized it too. Our 20 month old daughter loves it and friends leave messages on it when they come visit, it's great!

I love this stuff! After moving many years ago, it was decided to hide the breaker panel behind something (we chose to put this on a small framed door, and placed it over the panel). Worked wonders!

The tree and fridge ideas are so cute! I've always been worried about the paint-over-a-bility too. We're planning on selling in the next 1 1/2 years or so...I'd hate to turn off a buyer.
