Stainless Steel Countertops — Love It or Hate It?

Love It or Hate It? Stainless Steel Countertops

On Sunday, I asked you whether you loved or hated stainless steel backsplashes, and with 57 percent of you loving the look, you seemed pretty torn. In the comments, a few of you said that you like the look but hate would hate cleaning it. So now I'm wondering what you think of stainless steel countertops? I came across this photo of a bar in a $7.8 million mansion in San Francisco, and I love the industrial-meets-vintage aesthetic here. Paired with the handpainted walls, glass shelves, and a mustard yellow window frame, the stainless steel countertops look much less harsh and sterile. What are your thoughts?

Stainless isnt that hard to keep clean. I am a fan of stainless steel as I have to have an industrial work surface in my kitchen or else I simply waste my money.. LOL. Im the one who forgets sometimes what a cutting board is or what a trivet is for my hot pans.. Anyway, I go to Target and buy the Method brand Stainelss Steel Cleaner. It works great and has an amazing smell not to mention it is environmentally friendly! Also steel can be cheap if you know where to look. I picked up my steel work tables at a restaurant auction for pennies on the dollar and mixed them in with some old butcher block counter surfaces I found at a local flea market for pennies on the dollar again. So you just have to know your price point, what design you are going for and where to get that look. Hope this helps!

I love the vintage-modern combination, looks fab! Love it! However, as much as I like it, I wouldn't get ss for my kitchen, exactly 'cuz of the cleaning issue....

I had them in an apartment a few years ago and they were a bitch to keep clean. So dislike!

That looks fine, but not really my style. I would become tired of it.

Dislike. In my opinion I find it too cold for my taste. Sometimes my color palette leans towards more steely based tones, for counters I prefer an added warmth, even a small dose. Steel is too harsh for me. My dream kitchen is a light blue/white or ivory palette with punches of color here and there, sort of Cape Cod meets simplicity. I would source the countertop (and mostly everything else) from a more earth-friendly material. I love the countertops made from concrete then embeded with slices of agate or tiles. Also beautiful and quirky are counters from recycled glass bottles. So beautiful and great to know that everytime you prepare your meal on it, that you made a good choice for the earth and your health (no lead, voc-free, etc.)

i would like this if everything else was white and feminine, crystal knobs maybe some blonde wood somewhere. only if affordable though, is it cheaper than granite with black it just makes me think of a bar environment

I like the counter top here. Nice. I'm with Mizzlady. I own a suite of stainless steel kitchen appliances, and they're easy to keep clean. And they're durable and practical. Love them.

I'm sorry - they look like they belong in a school cafeteria kitchen! Yuck! Stainless steel appliances and accents are great, but an entire counter top just looks cheap.

In the case of a bar or resturant I love it. I do not want it in my home. I do not care for the look, although I do like it for a kitchen sink. When I replace my current sink it will be with a LARGE stainless one.

I've lived in a couple of houses that had stainless steel counter tops. They do look nice when they are clean but keeping them clean is a real chore.

I love this look...and I have SS appliances in my kitchen... I have no trouble keeping it clean.... I polish with a cleaner as needed... (2-3weeks).... takes 10-15 minutes... and use a micro fiber cleaning cloth to buff is up as needed... couple of minsutes at tops... it always shines and looks beautiful....

i think it looks so cool but after hearing how ridiculously hard stainless is to keep clean, i wouldn't want it in my house, unless i could afford a maid! (i bet the people who own this bar could afford a maid!) - i have stainless accents in my kitchen like small appliances and papertowel holder, S&P shakers etc, but nothing huge
