7 Chilling Ways to Turn Your House Into the Stranger Things Set This Halloween

Oct 28 2016 - 1:40pm

If you haven't seen Netflix's Stranger Things [1], you're seriously missing out. The nostalgic, '80s-inspired TV show has become an instant hit — and the perfect inspiration for your Halloween [2] decor. So whether you decide to dress up as Barb or Nancy this Halloween, any guests to your home will be sure to feel like they've arrived in the Upside Down.

Flickering Christmas Lights

Each time the Christmas tree lights flicker on Stranger Things [3], the audience knows something is going to happen — something bad and scary. Create this ominous feeling in your own home by hanging as many strings of Christmas lights as you can, inside and outside, and go for a mismatched look to really channel the Stranger Things vibe.

Dead Matter

Channel the cold, dark Upside Down dimension by covering your home with dead matter. You can get creative with how to reproduce it, but paper mache and fake cobwebs are a great place to start. You can choose to cover the whole of your space with dead matter, or create a portal on one of your walls.

Painted Alphabet

Having the alphabet painted on a wall (or on a bulletin board if you don't want to fully commit!) is sure to induce shivers in any Stranger Things [4] fan. Hang a string of Christmas lights above it and you've got yourself a way to communicate with people in the Upside Down.

A Hole in the Wall

To make a hole without any permanent damage, try to find some black hole decals or create your own with construction paper. The idea is to make it look like someone has driven an axe through it, so make it look as messy and erratic as possible.

Dungeons & Dragons

Dungeons & Dragons, the classic fantasy role-playing game, heavily influences the plot of the show, and it can help turn up the spooky factor in your Stranger Things [5]-inspired home this Halloween [6]. Set up a Dungeons & Dragons game on a spare table — making sure to have a Demogorgon piece front and center.

Anything '80s

The best way to tie all of these decorations together is with lots of '80s-inspired accents. For some really easy '80s inspired updates to your current decor, cover your throw pillows and go thrifting for knickknacks. Cover your couch in a knitted blanket to really channel Joyce's living room. Just remember not to go over the top and tacky: the beauty of Stranger Things [7] is how authentically it represents this era!

Period Soundtrack

Want to make your guests really feel like they've stepped into Hawkins, IN, in the '80s? Pair your Halloween [8] decor with some '80s music. The official Stranger Things [9] soundtrack is an obvious place to start, just make sure you've got The Clash's "Should I Stay or Should I Go" on your playlist.
