Use Fireplace Inserts to Save Money and Heat

Are You Falling Out of Love With Your Fireplace?

A recent New York Times article proclaims that Americans are ending their love affair with their fireplaces for a variety of reasons. Health concerns — wood smoke contains some of the same particulates as cigarette smoke — and environmental awareness tops the list. One way to enjoy the fireplace's glow while minimizing health and environmental risks is by using a fireplace insert, which reduces heat loss by up to 60 percent, and doesn't blow woodsmoke into your conditioned space.

Elka - Here is the manufacturer's picture: It doesn't give off as much heat as a regular fireplace, but it does the job if you're sitting near it!

I still love my fireplace! I live in Los Angeles so anytime it gets cold enough I use the fireplace.

I wish I had a fireplace. Esp in the winter - so cozy! Or SF foggy summers. :)

Stacy W, I'd love to see a picture of it. How is it in terms of heating?

I have a wall-mounted, bio-ethanol burning fireplace. I LOVE it! It's so chic, modern and a great conversation piece.

I totally agree about the ceiling heat vents. It makes no sense at all!

I would LOVE to have a fireplace right now! My apartment is freezing! Ceiling heat in a single-story building = FAIL.
