Would You Buy a Book For Its Cover?

These gorgeous deluxe editions of Penguin Classics are expected to be released in paperback in the US around Mother's Day this year. You can't go wrong with a copy of Great Expectations on your bookshelf, but I'd buy these beauties simply for the cover art — regardless of the content. Would buy a book just for its cover?

I would buy them for some editions, but it really depends on which book. Penguin likes to take liberties with verse and prose, far diminishing the integrity of the text (particularly for works translated into English, or works dialectically derived from Middle English). It's annoying the lengths they go to modernize the text of otherwise excellent prose. For most other find book purchases, I'll stick to Folio Society editions who have a greater respect for the works, or truly novel editions found on AbeBooks.

You can get them at That's where I bought the set. Send me a DM and I can get you the ISBN numbers to search for.

Ok, I still want these, but can't find them anywhere, not even on Penguin's site. HELP!

I already have way too many books, one with a pretty cover would probably get lost in the bookshelf. But my husband and i like the look of the Library of America books, they have their own special bookcase because they look so good on their own.

Yes. I have often picked up books because I liked the way the cover looked - some were really enjoyable (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, Eat Pray Love), and others no so much (The Amazing Adventure of Kavalier and Clay).

Only if I liked the book as well and would read it!

No. I'd buy a different edition of a book, because sometimes the same book has different covers, but I would never buy a book just to decorate. I want to have bookshelves filled with good books that I love to read; for me, that's what makes an interesting room. That being said, those are beautiful!

I just saw one of these in B&N tonight. Proust's "In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower", I think. The cover is even prettier in person. :)

There are enough versions of enough books that it isn't necessary to waste paper and space buying a book you won't read for its cover.

These are so much prettier than the books sitting on my bookshelf right now...

Just for the covers? No. If I want funky covers I'll do a DIY at home and cover books I already have.

I actually go to thrift stores and book stores looking for vintage books or books with cool covers.

I love buying beautiful versions of the classics, but I wouldn't buy just ANY book that is pretty.

my sister is in school to be an english teacher so i randomly buy her classis, but it's nice when they have a nice cover so they would look good on a can buy classics in so many different forms (nice covers, cheap covers, hard covers, soft covers, decorated covers) so why not get it because it's pretty

Giggling at GlowingMoon's comment. I wouldn't only buy a book because it had a pretty cover.... but I would definitely choose to buy one edition of a book over another if the cover was nicer. These covers are gorgeous, and to be honest it's a shambles not to have titles such as these classics in your book collection.

No. I subscribe to the age-old adage "Never judge a book by its cover." ;)

I've been drooling over these lovelies ever since I spotted them online last year. Thank GOD they're finally available stateside. And while I would never buy a book just for the cover--what's between the covers is most important--I have to admit a beautiful cover has caught my attention many a time and even tipped me into the "must buy now" category on quite a few occasions.
