I would try to sand down the area you want to spray paint to remove as much of the dark stain as possible. The spray actually covers quite well so even if it is laminate or you can't remove much of the stain with sanding you could do multiple coats and most likely get the same effect.

For those that asked I used Minwax pre stain wood conditioner then Minwax gel stain in walnut. I did 2 light coats of the gel stain, probably could have done 3 for a richer look. I finished it with Minwax wipe on poly to help protect the stain. For the spray paint on the legs I used rustoleum American Accents Metallic Satin Nickel.
