While some Latinos are still coming to grips with the fact that Donald Trump won the presidential election [3], there's a silver lining: we're making history in other areas of office. Nevada's Catherine Cortez Masto is the first-ever Latina US senator-elect [4], and now, New York's Adriano Espaillat has the honor of being the first Dominican-American elected into Congress.
Congressman-elect Espaillat, 62, who is a formerly undocumented immigrant [5], was a fierce supporter of Hillary Clinton's campaign, and though his candidate of choice won't hold the highest office, he's dedicated to making a difference in his district, which includes upper Manhattan and a part of the Bronx.
Espaillat took to Twitter to express his gratitude [6] to those who voted, writing, "I am deeply grateful to the people of the 13th Congressional District for electing me to serve as their next Congressman." What an amazing feat!
