We just celebrated the one-year anniversary of POPSUGAR Latina, where we asked our readers and followers to share some of their favorite things about their culture. Read on to learn what our spotlight blogger, Daily Baez [1], loves most about being "all American, all Latina":
POPSUGAR: What makes you an "all American, all Latina"?
Daily Baez: I think I manage to have the best of both worlds. I follow all the rules and tradition in the United States without losing my identity as a Latina, as a Dominican. I have a lot of fun; there is always a reason to celebrate being in America and always a reason to celebrate being a Latina.
PS: What is one of your favorite Latina-inspired traditions?
DB: Noche Buena; this night is just magical and brings back so many memories of my childhood, the smell of cerdo en puya, teleras, pasteles, ponche, and ensalada rusa is the best . . . even here in the United States, I try to re-create the same dinner I used to have when I was a child in the Dominican Republic.
PS: Who in the Latina community do you look up to the most and why?
DB: I just moved to the United States seven years ago, so my English is far from perfect and I have a thick Dominican accent. When I first got here, I was intimated to speak with other people or Latinas that had being here for years, especially in public, but Sofia Vergara gave me the courage and the motivation to speak in public, to be proud of my accent. If she was so confident and doing amazing things with her accent, then I could too.
PS: Favorite Latin dish?
DB: My favorite Latin dish is an amazing stew or soup very popular in Dominican Republic called sancocho, #yummy. I am hungry right now.
PS: Favorite Latin musician?
DB: I love so many artists, so many ritmos from all over Latin America, but I really love Ricardo Arjona with a passion, even though my friends and I are always debating and they're trying to convince me to stop liking him, but I love him.
PS: Favorite Latina fashion icon?
DB: I have to say J LO, because she is always on point, but also because she always reinvents herself and also takes care of her body doing a lot of exercise and taking care of her body from the inside out.
