The fact that Diego Luna got to keep his Mexican accent for his part as Captain Cassian Andor in Rogue One [1] (instead of having to hide it with help from a voice coach) is a big deal, and a tweet from the Mexican actor is summing up exactly why in the most perfect way.
On Jan. 4, Diego shared a screenshot of Tumblr user RiverAlwaysKnew's story where she talks about taking her Mexican dad to see the Star Wars movie [2] featuring Diego in a leading role. "I wanted my Mexican father, with his thick Mexican accent, to experience what it was like to see a hero in a blockbuster film, speak the way he does," the fan says, before detailing her dad's reaction to hearing Diego's accent on a major blockbuster. She finishes with the truest words ever spoken about Latinos needing bigger roles in movies and TV: "Representation matters."
Diego was, of course, touched by the message saying he "got emotional" reading the story. Read the full sweet post below.
