Selena's Fame Started Growing When She Was Just 9 Years Old

Sep 10 2017 - 11:00am

Selena Quintanilla was just a kid when she started winning people over as a 9-year-old, performing at her father's restaurant [1] in their hometown of Lake Jackson, TX. The late Tejana singer, who sadly passed away at just 23 years old [2], and her two siblings, Suzette and A.B. [3], had musical talent running through their veins, since their dad also performed with a band at young age. He re-created that band, the original Los Dinos, with his three kids, calling it Selena y Los Dinos.

The band continued to put on shows at venues around town while still attending middle school. Eventually, Selena's dad pulled decided she needed to leave school, when she was in the eighth grade, [4] so they could go on tour. She recorded her first record, Selena y Los Dinos, for Freddie Records in 1984 and never looked back.

Little by little, Selena won over the hearts of Latinx everywhere, with her career finally catapulting around the world when she won a Grammy Award for the release of Live! in 1993 [5]. Her memory is still alive, more then 20 years after her death, thanks to her family and fans.
