Shakira's Confidence Mantra Is Worth Repeating Every Day

Jun 12 2016 - 5:00pm

There's no doubt about it: Shakira [1] is a goddess! The Colombian singer is a do-it-all, multitasking mom of two [2], a devoted partner to soccer star Gerard Piqué [3], a hit-producing machine, and even an animated movie star, whose words can inspire absolutely anyone.

Lucky for us, the multitalented singer took some time from her busy schedule to celebrate the release of Zootopia on DVD, on sale now [4], in which she voices Gazelle, a pop star whose hips don't lie. In an interview with POPSUGAR Latina, she revealed the story behind her special bond with her character and (finally!) her secrets to staying superfit and confident. Scroll ahead to find her moving answers and get to know more about her new album, then check out the video for her Zootopia hit [5] "Try Everything."

Her Favorite Workout

"My favorite daily routine is tennis — it feels more like fun and less of a chore, and it feeds my competitive streak, which motivates me. When I'm traveling I'll do regular gym stuff or cardio dance and weights, but on tour usually the workout I get from my shows is enough to keep me in shape."

Her Favorite Confidence Mantra

"It sounds trite I'm sure, but really, feeling confident and comfortable in your own skin has a huge influence on how others also perceive you. I love to eat and also to be active, and if my body is the result of those two things that I love — why shouldn't I love my body as well."

Details on Her New Album

"I've really begun to enjoy it, although the beginning of an album is always a bit intimidating. I think it's too soon to say when I'll release it or to identify the sound — my albums tend to have an eclectic sound anyway — but it will be mostly Spanish, and a couple of songs in English. I've already written in both."

Her Connection With Her Zootopia Character

"I feel very emotionally identified with my character, Gazelle — like me, she is a pop star, opinionated, who feels a very strong responsibility towards her people, and uses her spotlight as a platform to talk about important issues and to try to motivate people — but I also identified with Judy [the bunny], because I was also once a small girl who dreamed very big."
