When the first Latin Grammys were announced on Sept. 13, 2000 at the Los Angeles Staples Center, Latin radio was playing lots of Maná, Shakira [1], and Luis Miguel. Reggaeton was not yet a thing, and even Pitbull's catchy pop beats weren't heard every time a song in Spanish (or English) came on. The tunes were mostly two things: rock or romantic.
