Netflix’s New Latinx Show Features a 15-Year-Old Girl Rocket Scientist

Most teenagers have a lot on their plates, sure, but for 15-year-old genius Ashley Garcia, the leading lady of Netflix's newest Latinx series, The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia, life is a little bit different than your average teen. Ashley (Paulina Chávez), who started college at age 9 and is the youngest person to ever earn a PhD, just scored a job in California making robots for a prestigious company — casual! Because she's spent her whole life in intensive schooling, the young robotics engineer and rocket scientist hasn't experienced a lot of the usual things teens go through, like having crushes and going to parties.

The new Netflix series, which was cocreated by Mario Lopez (who appears in the series along with Bella Podaras, Conor Husting, and Reed Horstmann) navigates Ashley's new life in California — she moves in with her uncle Victor (Jencarlos Canela), a high school football coach who doesn't have the slightest clue how to be a parent — and the new experiences she faces as both a teenager and a young woman with an epic career.
