Jesse & Joy Discuss LGBTQ+ Rights Inspiration Behind Their Star-Studded Video "Love"

Seven months after hitting a stage together for the last time, Jesse & Joy debuted their LGBTQ+ rights-focused [1] song "Love (es nuestro idioma)" live for the first time at the Latin Billboard Music Awards [2]. We spoke to the Mexican-American brother-sister duo, about their campaign to raise awareness against conversion therapies and all forms of violence against the LGBTQ+ community.

In an interview with POPSUGAR over Zoom, the pair admitted that they only recently found out that these therapies, which aim to change a person's sexual orientation, were still permitted. A family member who is a psychiatrist explained that these crimes against the LGBTQ+ community are not banned in some parts of Mexico and many other countries. "It sounds like something from another century, but when you think about it, you realize there are all kinds of aggressions that are transmitted in more subtle and seemingly trivial ways. It could be a comment or just a vibe," Joy said. "As women, sadly, we can recognize this kind of aggression faster."

After learning about this, the six-time Latin Grammy winners decided to use their song "Love (es nuestro idioma)" as the soundtrack for a campaign they launched in collaboration with UNAIDS, the United Nations HIV/AIDS program, and YAAJ, a nonprofit that protects LGBTQ+ rights in Mexico. To help spread this powerful message even more, they asked some of their famous friends to participate in a self-directed music video they shot at their homes during the pandemic, which includes cameos by Latinx superstars like Juanes, Alejandro Sanz, Kany Garcia, Mon Laferte, and many, many more. The clip already has more than two million views!

"[The song] speaks to a natural love without prejudice, and celebrates that we are all equal," she explains. "I thought we could use it to reach a bigger audience and make a real difference. So, we brought together 200 personalities from the music and entertainment industries that everyone knows and admires. Ninety-eight percent of the people we asked to be in the video didn't know about these therapies, but 98 percent of them immediately said 'Yes, what do you need? How can I help?' with no hesitation."

All profits from this video will be donated to YAAJ's mission and efforts to end these practices that violate human rights and have just been banned in Mexico State. Check out the "Love" video above!
